I had such positive feedback in regards to last week’s blog post (if you missed it, check it out here), so today I am sharing 8 ways to create a stress-free oasis in your home. I typically suggest you make a stress-free sanctuary in your home, because let’s face it, just because the work day is over doesn’t mean the stress is left at your door. Now more than ever we need these sacred spaces, we are spending A LOT more time in our homes, and possibly a lot more time with our cohabitants (or by yourself if you live alone, which can also be stressful). This doesn’t need to be an entire room, or anything to elaborate, I get it- I live in 600 square feet with my husband. The goal is to create a more calming vibe so you can relax, recharge and attempt to shut off that monkey brain. So, here are 8 tips for creating a stress-free oasis in your home:
1) Dim the lights, or use candles to create a relaxing atmosphere (especially in the evening to get that melatonin flowing) if you go the candle route, please opt for natural soy or beeswax candles, either unscented or scented with pure essential oils. For more information on the dangers of conventional candles check out this article
2) Declutter & organize: keep the space clean & clear to avoid distraction or added stress
3) Rearrange using Feng Shui principals: check out this blog post from the Feng Shui Society for an intro to the ancient Chinese practice
4) Include items that make you happy: this can be anything from décor, trinkets, crystals, photos, books, even a pet ;)
5) Add plants: If I could live in a jungle I would…if you’re not a natural plant lover like me, check out this article for 7 science-backed benefits of plants (hint, benefits include improving mental health, boosting immune system & improving air quality)
6) Get a salt lamp: I love using my salt lamp in the evening, its beautiful and creates a soothing ambiance (plus it helps with tip #1) Salt lamps may also improve mood, sleep and air quality.
7) Diffuse essential oils: I LOVE my DoTerra essential oils, I’m always defusing, smelling, applying or concocting something (if you’ve received one of roller bottles you know what’s up). Lavender has been a go to when I’m feeling anxious, stressed or need to sleep since I was a child. Lavender oil is high in the chemical constituent linalool which is well known for reducing sad and anxious feelings, other DoTerra oils I use (and love) for stress & sleep are Peace, Serenity & Balance blends.
8) Listen to Relaxing Music: If you’re in a shared space and don’t have a room to yourself listen to relaxing music, audiobooks or podcasts with headphones.
