Have you ever had a “gut feeling” or made a decision because you “just knew”? This was likely your inner guidance system, otherwise known as your intuition. I lost touch with this guidance as I got older, I am still working every day to tune in and most importantly, to trust it. In today’s post I am sharing 5 steps to tune in and access your intuition, keep in mind that this requires intentional practice until you are able to tune into this guidance effortlessly throughout your day.
1. Set the Intention and Remain Open to Receive
Use this affirmation to reprogram your subconscious to access your intuitive guidance: I am fully aligned with my true self and I let it guide me, I am open to receive messages from my inner guidance.
2. Be Still
Mediation is one of the most important practices for tuning into your intuition. Meditation clears the mind and makes room to receive those messages, it drowns out the outside influences and connects you to your Higher Self. I recommend a daily meditation practice, something that works for you and your lifestyle. Step number 3 can be done before meditation, or after simply taking a couple moments in quiet stillness.
3. Ask a Question
Once your mind is still, ask a question about something you would like guidance on, for example “is this the right choice” or “what do I need to know about xyz”. Take a couple of deep breaths and let it go, trusting you will get your answer. Your answer may come instantly, or when you least expect it, it may come as a word, picture, thought, feeling or sensation in your body, it may even come as a person, opportunity or experience.
4. Check in with Your Feelings and Body
FEELING and connecting with your body is essential for registering intuitive signals. Check in with yourself, how do you feel? What emotions are arising? What sensations do you feel in your body? What thoughts are arising? And remember your intuition will likely be whispering to you, it tends to be subtle and that’s why it’s so important to be still, clear your mind and develop self-awareness. Mindfulness practices, meditation, body scan technique, journaling, yoga and emotional intelligence can all be helpful to develop this awareness.
5. Trust & Surrender
When you notice a sensation, a feeling, a thought whatever it may be, tune into that. Does the sensation feel good, or does it feel slightly uncomfortable? /the best piece of advice I can give you is to follow what feels good, if it doesn’t feel good step back and reassess. Remember, it may not appear to make sense, but everything is always working for your greatest good. Practice suspending judgment of situations even when you disagree with how things are unfolding, in the words of John Lennon: “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”
Bonus Exercise: Journaling
Journaling is one of my favourite activities and an excellent way to get back in touch with your intuition. Here are 4 journal prompts to get you started:
1. What do I need to know right now/today?
2. What is this feeling/experience here to teach me?
3. How can I feel more peace/joy/love right now in this moment?
4. Journal on step #3: Write out a question you’d like clarity on then just start writing whatever comes to mind. As you write ask yourself questions like “Why do I feel this way?” and keep writing until you have a moment of clarity.
